  • Sliding type overhead locks. A simple mechanism that easily attaches to any material with a flat surface. To further strengthen the mechanism on the front side, you can use a padlock, which should be installed on the mounting ears.

  • Screw valves. The screw mechanism is installed on the front side of the gate and is quite easy to use. It consists of a rod with a screw thread and a key base, which has a recess and a small pin. Using a special key, which has a corresponding recess and pin, the shutter mechanism is activated. You can easily make such a lock with your own hands. However, the complexity of such a device lies in the fact that in the wicket opening there must be enough space for a recess with a thread into which the rod itself will be screwed. In addition, such a lock is easy to break by selecting a similar key.

  • Deadbolt lock with rack system. Such a shutter can be purchased in a store and only an experienced craftsman can build it with his own hands. It consists of a key with special recesses and a corresponding locking base. This design is particularly strong and durable, however, there is a possibility that the key can be counterfeited. Therefore, it is better to use some kind of additional lock to close the gate.

  • Groove lock with rotary mechanism. This lock has a simple design, and also boasts special reliability and protection from possible hacking. You can make it yourself, however, this will require professional knowledge, machines and tools. The principle of operation is that the falling key, when inserted into the keyhole, by means of circular movements activates a gear mechanism that opens or closes the gate.

  • Valves with spring-loaded fixation. These gates are used mainly on the inside and most often act as additional gate latches at the same level as the main lock. Their spring design allows the latch to be operated effortlessly.

  • Mortise lock. One of the most common constipation, which is sold in any hardware store. To install it, you will need to cut a hole in the inner base of the gate. The reliability of such a lock is at a high level. However, due to the complexity of the mechanism, it is almost impossible to make it at home.

  • Electromagnetic systems. Thanks to modern technologies, such a mechanism can protect you from hacking forever. It can be purchased from specialized companies and to install the system, you will most likely need the help of specialists. With the help of a reinforced magnet that operates electronically, your gate will be solidly fixed when closed. The lock is opened using a suitable magnetic key.

We make the locking mechanism ourselves

You can build a lock for the gate yourself at home. For convenience, it is recommended to use the simplest mechanism in the form of a horizontal latch on a spring basis.

Before you begin, determine the location on the gate to install the valve, and use a tape measure and pencil to make precise marks. Now draw a diagram of the future design; the most complete and understandable drawing is presented below.

Then prepare all the necessary materials and tools, such as:

  • metal plates of suitable size;
  • steel rod with eye;
  • spring;
  • vice;
  • hacksaw for metal;
  • hammer, screwdrivers or wrenches;
  • screwdriver, drill, welding machine.

First you should make a frame for the lock. To do this, take a metal plate and weld rod holders to it. Then attach the handle to the rod and insert it together with the spring into the finished frame. Now it's time to start installing the finished product.

If you have a metal gate, attach the lock to the indicated location using a welding machine or tighten the fastenings with screws and nuts.

Well, if you have a wooden gate, you can use self-tapping screws. Opposite the locking rod, in the corresponding place of the supporting post or gate profile, make a hole to fix the gate in the closed state.

Now your shutter is almost ready. However, you can only open it from the inside, so it is better to build a torsion bar mechanism. To do this, take a thin metal cable of the required length and make a small hole for it in the lower side of the gate.

Attach the cable to the eye of the valve, pull it to the outside through the hole and secure it somewhere in a closed place. By pulling it, you can open the gate from the outside.

You can make turntable locks for garage doors with your own hands quickly and easily. To do this you will need 50 mm wooden blocks and a metal strip.

Convenient and reliable pinwheel-type locks are perfect for swing gates, but they are not commercially available - it is not profitable for manufacturers to make them.

The principle of operation of such a lock is the simplest - a crossbar is secured in the center with a through bolt, which moves along wedge-shaped bars. When the gate is closed, the doors fit tightly against each other, resting against the door block.

This type of mechanism securely closes swing gates, even without additional bolts. It is impossible to open it from the outside, but it can be opened from the inside “with a slight movement of the hand.”

How to make a spinner latch for a garage door:

  • We attach a metal latch on top, which will spin on a self-tapping screw (diameter 8-10), hexagonal head. The upper latch is needed to increase rigidity and prevent deformation and twisting of the sashes, in addition, it is an additional stop;
  • The size of the turntable bar itself is 4.5 x 10 x 200 cm. It can be a steel strip or a wooden block, the thickness is at least 5 mm. We choose the length depending on the width of the gates; usually the length should be two-thirds of the width of the gate;
  • We fix the turntable in the center from the inside to the left leaf of the garage door with a through bolt (diameter 10 -12 mm). The distance from the edge of the sash is 6 – 10 cm;
  • so that the bolt turns easily, we put two washers on it;
  • on the gate leaf, on two leaves we make a groove with a clamp from a channel in which the bar will be attached when turning. It is better to grind the channel with a wedge so that the strip easily fits into the groove;
  • We attach a stop rail to the right sash from the outside, which should protrude beyond the sash by 10 - 20 mm.

The bolts on the outside need to be ground off so that they cannot be unscrewed. Such garage door locks hold the doors tightly in any strong wind and it is impossible to open them from the outside.

Espagnols - simple and reliable

The disadvantage of such constipation is that it does not ensure a tight fit of the valves. But this type of valve is reliable and durable, practically unbreakable.

An espagnolette is a metal rod with a stop that rides on a rail. The espagnolette is inexpensive, and a simple mechanism can be welded from an ordinary iron rod.

How to make a simple latch:

  • you need two metal rods (diameter greater than 10 mm);
  • We attach a handle to the rod. For a horizontal latch, we weld the handle in the center of the rod, for a vertical lock - at the top;
  • for the groove you need a metal tube with a diameter slightly larger than the rod so that it is firmly fixed in the tube;

  • Additionally, to secure the closed lock, we weld an eye into which the handle of the rod must be inserted.

Vertical bolts, welded on two gate leaves, securely fix the gate closer to the center. You can dig the pipe groove directly into the ground, it will be more reliable and easier.

Advice. For vertical locking, you can use powerful hooks. You just need to weld the eyelet to the bottom frame of the gate and attach the hook to each leaf. The hooks also need to be placed closer to the connection of the sashes, this way the fixation is more reliable and there is no backlash.

Barrier for garage doors

The barrier does not ensure a tight fit of the gates, but it is impossible to open the gate from the outside. The strip is made from a wooden block or channel.

  • We drill a hole for a rotary bolt (M10 or M12) at a distance of 8 cm from the end of the bar. Bolt length - take into account the thickness of the sash, the thickness of the locking strip itself and two washers, leaving a thread for tightening the nut;
  • drill a hole for the bolt in the gate leaf, attaching a strip of lock;
  • it is important that the bolt on which the barrier rotates has a wide, strong head, since it bears the entire load and emphasis;
  • We weld three gripper grooves onto two sashes. One groove on the sash, where the barrier strip was secured, is closer to the end, the second - opposite, on the other sash, also closer to the end of the sash, the third - at the farthest end of the second sash, so that the end of the barrier strip fits into it.

Sliding locks

It’s easier to buy it in a store and just weld it to the swing garage door leaves. But, if this is not possible, then you can make such a valve yourself:

  • you need a metal strip - length 40 cm and width - 5 cm;
  • this strip should move along the guide grooves;
  • guides on both sides of the leaves can be welded to the leaf on a metal plate on the gate leaf;
  • We attach the bolt itself to the other sash with metal screws or welding;
  • We attach brackets to the strip, from the edge and to the edge of the guide so that they can be additionally secured with a padlock.

Be sure to check the correct alignment of the grooves and strips several times so that they do not jam when closing. Then you can lubricate the locks with machine oil.

Universal reliable lock for the garage

The top lock on the garage door is difficult to open. But the craftsmen copied an interesting design from Finnish sites. It's easy to do:

  • We make metal hooks according to the drawing so that they are smooth, and we clean them with a grinder. Hook thickness – 12 mm;

To secure it in the open state, the use of additional clamps is required.

Among the more complex designs of garage door locks are the following:

  • mortise;
  • sliding deadbolt;
  • screw;
  • crossbar;
  • grooved

A good mortise lock costs good money. To be more precise, not mortise locks are used, but rim locks. Such constipations have large dimensions and significant weight. Some designs of locks and deadbolts for garage doors can be assembled from improvised materials, so the costs will only include the time for manufacturing and installation.

Pinwheel

The locking device, which is called a pinwheel, is quite effective and easy to manufacture. Such a locking mechanism is suitable for double-leaf swing gates; in some cases, such a mechanism is also used for gates. To make the locking mechanism, you will need a metal strip with a thickness of 30 mm. It’s good if the edges of the strip reach the middle of each door. The strip is attached with a bolt to the edge of one of the sashes. In this case, the smooth part of the bolt should come out so that it cannot be unscrewed.

Several hinges are installed along the size of the entire plank into which the lock will fit. Half of them will be directed upwards, and the others downward. This is done so that the gate can be opened with a rotational movement. This design does not provide for the possibility of opening the gate from the outside. This is a purely internal option. It is quite difficult to break into such gates.

Horizontal transom

To make such a locking mechanism, you will need a piece of reinforcement with a diameter of 20 mm. Its length will depend on the quality of the gate and its width. Threaded locking mechanism

Security vertical bolt

Security bolts are used to hold one of the doors while the other is opening. Also, the strength of such a bolt makes it possible to secure the second sash in the first due to the latch or lock. The first step is to choose a location for attaching this type of deadbolt. Most often, it is located closer to the edge of one of the doors and is attached to the frame in the form of a metal corner or profile pipe. The main working component is similar in shape to a horizontal crossbar. It bends on one side to make it easier to operate.

Two or three pieces of pipe are welded to the frame through which the bolt will pass. A hole is made in the frame and concrete directly below it so that it can secure the sash to the base. The depth to which the hole is made depends on the height and weight of the gate. The higher they are, the more you need to go deeper. For the locking mechanism, it is necessary to provide a latch that would hold it in the raised position. To do this, a small protrusion is welded at the top point of the locking mechanism, on which the bolt handle can be placed.

Advice! If the gate can only be opened from the inside, then the same mechanism can be made for the second leaf.

Electromechanical lock

Installation of such a mechanism on garage doors is carried out if one of the gate leaves is securely fixed. The location of the locking mechanism is marked. A hole is drilled for the keyhole, which will allow you to open the lock in the absence of power. At the end of the second sash, a hole is made for the crossbars of the electromechanical locking mechanism. Fixing the locking mechanism with through bolts is not a good idea, since it will be easy to dismantle it by drilling out such bolts.
